Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly qualified Protection Officer for our operations in our Assosa Field Office.
Overall purpose of the role

Under the line management of the Project Manager and the technical supervision of the Protection Specialist – Monitoring, the Protection Officer is responsible for implementing protection monitoring, PSS and CBPN activities in selected refugee sites and host communities in Benishangul-Gumuz and surrounding areas. The role focuses on conducting regular protection monitoring visits, collecting and encoding data, identifying and referring individuals at risk, sharing information, and reporting on emerging protection risks and trends.

The position will also identify and provide direct assistance to people with specific protection needs and support the implementation of other protection activities carried out by DRC in the designated project locations.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Conduct protection monitoring in assigned areas

  • Contribute in the development and review of protection monitoring tools, testing, plans and in the analysis of the collected information with the Protection Officer and Protection manager.

  • Identify and protection trends and needs in the assigned areas through Key Informant Interviews, Focus Group Discussions and observation.

  • Utilize data collection system for data collection and uploading in line with international standards, best practices and DRC protection monitoring guidelines

  • Identify individuals at risk, provide information and refer for specialized assistance.

  • Support coordination and implementation of Individual Protection Assistance.

  • Regularly monitor beneficiaries’ access to service, the effectiveness of referral service, and the contribution of referrals and individual protection assistance on addressing protection risks for individual cases.

  • Collaborate with Community Based Protection Networks (CBPN) and conduct community awareness raising and information dissemination on identified protection risks and prevention and mitigation strategies.

  • Maintain good relationships with CBPNs other stakeholders to collect daily information on fresh displacements in the area of coverage and support safe referrals

  • Participate in engaging with community-based structures on a consistent basis and sticking to respectful, culturally appropriate ways.

  • Ensure data is collected in line with Protection Information Management and protection principles, observing data protection Standard Operating Procedures

  • Participate in relevant trainings such as Protection Information Management and other topics 

  • Adhere to Ethical data collection and data protection protocols throughout protection monitoring process; 

  • Ensure proper documentation of activities conducted under the position as a means of verification to measure project progress, effectiveness, and efficiency.

  • Participate in protection and other multisectoral assessments

  • Report writing and documentation

  • Support in the development of daily, weekly and monthly reports.

  • Ensure proper documentation of all project monitoring activities

  • Provide input during the protection monitoring reports and protection analysis 

Job Requirements

Experience and technical competencies:

  • Minimum of two year’s experience in an entry to mid-level position, with experience in the field of humanitarian response and refugee/IDP protection working for an international NGO, UN agency or relevant ministry or local authority.

  • Experience in conducting protection monitoring or protection assessments using online data collection tools such as Kobo and Activity info

  • Good data collection, analysis and reporting skills

  • Experience working with displaced or conflict affected populations.

  • Strong planning, organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to work both independently and within a team.

  • Integrity, strong work ethic, and ability to consistently meet deadlines under pressure.

  • Full proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel. Full proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel; proficiency in Kobo and other data collection/analysis tools desirable

EDUCATION: (include certificates, licenses, etc.)

  • Bachelor degree in Psychology, sociology, social work or other related fields from recognized institution.

LANGUAGE: (indicate Fluency level)

  • Proficient of English language

  • Knowledge of local language is an advantage
