The Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) is an international non-profit non-governmental organization with its offices in Addis Ababa, Uganda, Mali and Nigeria. The SAA Country Office in Ethiopia promotes the adoption of improved pre- and post-harvest agricultural technologies for smallholder farmers in collaboration with government institutions, farmers’ organizations and the private sector. SAA is currently focusing on three major thrust areas: sustainable and regenerative agriculture (RA), nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA), and market-oriented agriculture (M-OA). To strengthen its thrust areas, SAA is looking for qualified Ethiopian nationals for the following positions.
Based at the Country Office in Addis Ababa, and under the direct supervision of the Regenerative Agriculture Technical Coordinator (TC), the Program Officer will strengthen the Regenerative Agriculture pillar in alignment with other pillars, and ensure that solutions provided to small scale farmers are based on sound knowledge of sustainable and regenerative agriculture principles and practices.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The specific tasks of the position include the following:
Assist in the reconnaissance surveys, project site selection, and baseline data collection
Assist in the planning and implementation of innovative regenerative agriculture interventions centered on Conservation Agriculture (CA) and Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM), and ensure that regenerative agriculture tools, methods, and indicators are used effectively
Assist in training on regenerative agriculture to Extension Agents (EAs) and farmers in collaboration with Regional/Zonal/Woreda Agricultural Offices and SAA technical staff
Assist in setting up regenerative agriculture demonstrations in the Farmer Training Centers (FTCs) and host farmers’ fields, and ensure that all project-related inputs are delivered on time to the respective project sites
Assist in identifying and introducing improved technologies and good agricultural practices, that can regenerate soil fertility and health, boost productivity, and contribute to the resilience of agro-ecosystems
Support in the introduction and promotion of small-scale irrigation systems and technologies, and crop-livestock integration to increase smallholder farmers' productivity and climate change adaptation
Assist in organizing and coordinating experience sharing and peer-to peer learning farmers' field day events in collaboration with Regional/Zonal/District Agricultural Offices
Ensure that women, youth, and people with disabilities (PwDs) receive adequate attention in his/her interventions
Assist in the formation of a RA community of practice, and the identification and scaling up of good RA practices.
Contribute to the development of regenerative agriculture proposals and concept notes for fundraising
Collaborate with SAA staff from all the SAA focus pillars (RA, NSA and Mo-A) to ensure idea cross-fertilization and activity coordination
Participate in conducting regular field monitoring to track regenerative agriculture project activities and provide timely technical guidance and advice to extension staff and host farmers
Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, annual reports, as well as field mission back- to-office reports
Assist in developing regenerative agriculture training manuals and guidelines; documenting lessons and best practices; publishing articles in journals and SAA’s voices from the field, newsletters, brochures, and flyers, etc.
Assist in the data collection, establishment, maintenance, and management of RA database, and target farmers profiles
Assist in developing and strengthening systems, networks, and forging and maintaining strategic partnerships for the effective implementation of RA practices
Perform any other duties as directed by his/her supervisor
Educational Background and Experience:
BSc/MSc in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, Natural resources management, Agroecology, Sustainable agriculture, Regenerative Agriculture, or any other relevant education qualifications
7 years of relevant work experience for a BSc; 5 years for an MSc.
Competence:
English Proficiency: Level B2 (spoken and written)
Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel); Power point; and statistical software's
Basic knowledge of Biometry, Experimental Design and Statistical analysis and good reporting skill
Knowledge and experience on regenerative and sustainable agriculture, agro ecology, including the role of traditional and indigenous knowledge in sustainable production systems
Basic agri-business skills
Skills in using ICT (GPS and e-extension tools)
Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
Excellent interpersonal skills
