Works in partnership with : IM/GIS Officer, Office Manager, Logistics Assistant and Medical Assistant

Location: Roving, field based in Afar region, working on a cycle-basis of approximately 3 weeks in the field, 1 week off.

Contract type: fixed term (12 months, renewable, 60 days probation) 

Role Summary

The Multitask Deputy Team (MTT) Leader supports the Supervisor in the execution of Non-Technical Survey and Explosive Ordnance Disposal operations in the field. This field-based role requires strong teamwork, communication, and initiative. The Deputy Team Leader acts as the second in command within the Multitask Team, supporting the Team leader in ensuring that operations are conducted safely, ethically, and in accordance with HALO’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Ethiopia National Mine Action Standards (ENMAS), and International Mine Action Standards (IMAS).

In addition to supporting core survey functions, the Deputy Team Leader helps maintain team discipline, assists with data collection quality control, and serves as acting lead in the Supervisor's absence. This role requires a proactive individual capable of working in remote and potentially hazardous environments.

Job Requirements

  • Education: Minimum Completion of Grade 12

  • Experience: At least 3 years of experience in mine clearance activities, community liaison, or similar fieldwork 

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Lead by example, demonstrating impeccable integrity and professionalism at all times, inspiring others to behave similarly.

  • Assist the Supervisor in day-to-day planning and field coordination

  • Support and motivate the team to uphold HALO’s values of discipline, respect, integrity, and moral courage

  • Monitor team welfare and alert the Supervisor to any personnel or operational issues

  • Lead the team in the Team leader’s  absence, ensuring adherence to SOPs

Operational Planning and Security Awareness

  • Participate in pre-deployment briefings and ensure all team members understand their roles

  • Support the Team Leader in engaging with local authorities and community leaders

  • Assist in journey and CASEVAC (Casualty Evacuation) planning when required

  • Maintain high situational awareness and report safety or security concerns immediately

Survey and Data Collection

  • Conduct interviews with community members under Supervisor guidance

  • Ensure complete, clear, and ethical data collection, including representation from women, children, and people with disabilities

  • Use tools such as GPS and mapping instruments correctly during fieldwork

  • Assist in drawing hazard maps and reviewing survey data before submission

Logistics and Equipment Support

  • Check and prepare survey equipment and supplies before field deployment

  • Report issues with logistics, transport, or equipment to the Supervisor

  • Assist with inventory and maintenance of team gear

Communication and Reporting

  • Report all broken and faulty equipment to the supervisor who will then report to the radio room. 

  • Report any incidents, near misses, or concerns promptly to the Supervisor

  • Support the supervisor with the preparation and production of accurate reports 

Skills & Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage others.

  • Physical resilience and ability to deploy for extended durations to remote locations, on a basis of 3 weeks of field work for 1 week of stand down (rest)

  • Willingness to work in a small team (4 people) comprising men and women

  • Understanding this role is permanently based in Afar, with operations starting from Semera town

  • Fluency in Afar and Amharic; basic English is an advantage

  • Valid driving license is an advantage

  • Basic computer literacy is an advantage

  • Valid Ethiopian Identity card
