The Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO) is a non-governmental, non-profit-making, non-partisan and membership-based organization legally registered by the Ethiopian Civic Society Authority with registration number 1146 and is currently working as a human rights civil society. It was established in October 1991 by 32 founding members from academia, business, and other professions. The Council a founding member of Defend Defenders and the Consortium of Ethiopian Human Rights Organizations (CEHRO) has an observer status in the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, regular membership in the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH), as well as membership in the World Organization against Torture (OMCT). It functions across Ethiopia through its district offices in Addis Ababa, Gondar, Bahirdar, Hawassa, Arba Minch, Jijiga, Dire Dawa, Nekemte, and Gambella.
EHRCO is an organization that, through its courageous and dedicated Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), strives for the establishment of a Democratic system, the prevalence of the Rule of Law, and respect for Human Rights. EHRCO works in situation monitoring, investigating, and reporting on Ethiopia's human rights situation at its core. Furthermore, EHRCO investigates, documents, and reports on (often serious and widespread) human rights violations and has specialized in targeted monitoring such as prison, trial proceedings, free legal aid, and election monitoring. Additionally, EHRCO is involved in various projects and programs focusing on human rights and human rights-related issues.
EHRCO is well recognized by different local and international organizations, the latest being, and in acknowledgment of its resilience for over three decades of work within trying political and security conditions, the 2022 human rights award from the German section of Amnesty International.
With this in mind, EHRCO is interested in hiring 1 (one) qualified and well-experienced expert legal analyst for its human rights work. And the job description, duties and responsibilities, and requirements of the post are specified as follows.
Job Description
Reporting to the EHRCO’s Head of Human Rights Monitoring, Investigation, Documenting, and Reporting (MIDR) Department, the legal analyst will be responsible for conducting research, assembling legal documents and evidence, and maintaining databases and tracking systems vis-a-vis EHRCO’s MIDR work. He/she is skilled at conducting legal research, and they organize, assess, and file necessary documents and research and gather related legal information especially as an input to EHRCO’s Urgent, Special, and Regular Reports.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
Under the supervision of the Head of EHRCO’s MIDR Department, the Legal Analyst will be responsible for the following duties;
Conduct legal research and gather related legal information;
Decipher laws, rulings and regulations;
Monitor, study and develop analysis as a stand-alone report or as an input to other relevant publications;
Daily record keeping with electronic and physical filing of documents;
Synthesize and organize information, and create reference tools for easy use by the team, and
Serve as the primary point of contact for legal and regulatory support.

Qualifications
BA degree in law and Human Rights (mandatory).
At least 1 year of experience as a legal analyst or similar.
Analytical thinker with strong theoretical and research proficiencies.
Ability to comprehend and interpret legal documents.
Thorough knowledge of databases and tracking systems.
Solid organizational skills and detail-oriented.
Detail-oriented and excellent multitasking skills.
Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to remain calm under pressure and in conflict situations.
Proficient in Microsoft Office.
