Ascend Consulting Engineers Plc is an Ethiopian consulting engineering firm based in Addis Ababa. The firm specializes in construction contract administration, claims management and dispute resolution. We advise Employers, Contractors and Consultants on contracts governed by the FIDIC Conditions of Contract and by the Ethiopian public procurement, conditions and we represent clients in Dispute Review Expert, Dispute Board and arbitration proceedings. Our portfolio covers road, bridge, building, aviation and industrial park projects across Ethiopia. We work in small, senior teams. Every member is expected to take direct responsibility for the files placed in their hands. To meet a growing workload, the firm invites applications from qualified professionals for the following positions.

Purpose of the Position:

The site based Junior Contract Engineer is the eyes of the firm on the project. The holder secures the contemporary records on which every claim depends, serves notices in time, keeps the head office informed of events as they happen rather than after they have passed, and prepares the draft claim report for each claim event arising on the project.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology and Management (COTM ) or with related field of study

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as Junior office, Junior contract and Junior planning Engineer on a construction site, in site engineering, quantity surveying, planning or contract administration.

Quantity Required: One (1)

Duty Station: Project site, as assigned

Employment Type: Full time, subject to a probation period

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collect, organize and safeguard contemporary records, including site diaries, daily labour and equipment returns, weather records, delivery records, survey data, test results and photographs with dates.

  • Monitor site events that may give rise to a claim, and report them to the head office immediately so that notices are served within the time allowed by the contract.

  • Draft site correspondence, requests for information, confirmations of verbal instructions and notices for review by the Contract Engineer.

  • Maintain registers of instructions, variation orders, drawings, notices, correspondence and claims for the project.

  • Follow up joint measurement, quantity records and interim payment certificates, and record any deduction or dispute.

  • Track actual progress against the accepted programme and record the causes of any delay or disruption.

  • Prepare the draft claim report for each claim event arising on the project.

  • Attend site meetings, take reliable notes and check the minutes issued by others for accuracy.

  • Coordinate with the contractor's site management and with the Engineer's staff on contractual matters, within the limits set by the head office.

Terms of Employment:

  • Salary is negotiable and will be fixed according to qualification, experience and the outcome of the interview.

  • Benefits and allowances are provided in accordance with the firm's personnel policy.

  • Appointment is subject to a probation period in accordance with the Ethiopian Labour Proclamation.

Skills & Competencies

  • Basic knowledge of the FIDIC Conditions of Contract and of measurement and payment practice.

  • Good competence in Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project is an advantage.

  • Good written English, with the ability to produce accurate and complete records and to prepare a draft claim report from those records.

  • Willingness to be stationed at a project site for an extended period, including sites in remote areas.

Requirements Common to All Positions:

  • Ethiopian nationality or a valid work permit to work in Ethiopia.

  • Complete and verifiable documentary evidence of education and work experience.

  • Ability to work in a small team where each member carries individual responsibility for the files assigned to them.

  • Discretion, since the firm handles confidential and commercially sensitive client information.

  • Readiness to work additional hours when a contractual deadline requires it.
