The intern shall support OHCHR Ethiopia Country Programme in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented. The Intern reports to the Deputy Country Representative of OHCHR-EARO and the Team Leader of the Capacity Building and Technical Cooperation Workstream under the overall coordination of the Regional Representative.

Job Requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or

  •  Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent or

  •  Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or have completed an aforementioned academic degree in the area of law and human rights.

Job Competencies:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English and Amharic is required. Knowledge of another language spoken in Ethiopia is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities

– Monitor and analyze human rights developments and trends, especially related to accountability/transitional justice, civic space and the human rights of women and persons with disability in Ethiopia; research and draft internal and external notes and reports within the assigned area; support the organization of events (e.g., human rights trainings, workshops, celebrations to mark Human Rights Day); support the engagement of stakeholders with the UN human rights mechanisms; assist efforts to integrate human rights perspectives in national policies, plans and strategies; participate and take notes in meetings/conferences, as requested; and perform other duties as requested by the supervisor, as appropriate.
