Role Overview

We are seeking a highly qualified HSE Engineer to join our vertical farming operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring health, safety, and environmental systems to ensure compliance with national regulations and international best practices. A strong background in agricultural HSE is highly desirable, as this role requires specialized knowledge of farming environments, biological risks, and sustainable practices.

Job Requirements

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or related field of study

• Experience: 7–10 years of proven experience in HSE roles, with at least part of that experience in agriculture, food production, or farming environments

• Location: Addis Ababa

•  Employment Type: Full-time

Duties and Responsibilities

Policy Development & Compliance

• Establish and enforce HSE policies, procedures, and standards aligned with industry regulations.

• Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with local and international safety laws.

Workplace Safety & Training

• Lead safety induction and training programs for staff and contractors.

• Promote a strong safety culture across all vertical farming facilities.

Monitoring & Reporting

• Perform regular inspections of growing rooms, equipment, and agricultural work areas.

• Investigate incidents, prepare reports, and recommend corrective actions.

Agricultural HSE Focus

• Identify and mitigate risks specific to farming operations (chemical handling, biological hazards, water systems, and crop protection).

• Ensure safe use of fertilizers, pesticides, and controlled-environment farming technologies.

Environmental Management

• Implement sustainable practices to minimize environmental impact.

• Monitor waste management, water usage, and energy efficiency.

Emergency Preparedness

• Develop and maintain emergency response plans.

• Coordinate drills and ensure readiness for fire, chemical, or equipment-related incidents.

Skills & Competencies

• Strong knowledge of ISO standards (ISO 14001, ISO 45001) and local regulatory frameworks.

• Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to train and motivate diverse teams.
