Corbetti Geothermal PLC (CGC) is a Special Purpose Vehicle company, incorporated in late 2014 under Ethiopian law, to develop the Corbetti geothermal resource in Corbetti locality of Shalla Woreda, West Arsi Zone of the Oromia National Regional State, Ethiopia.

The Project is located within the Corbetti Caldera 250 km south of Addis Ababa, next to Lake Hawassa. The Corbetti caldera geothermal resource covers an area of 155 km² of extensive young volcanism, the resource estimated to contain up to 1,000 MW with steam temperatures exceeding 250⁰C.

The development requires construction of access roads, well pads and a water supply line. Then assembly of a rig precedes exploration drilling ahead of construction and operation of power plants. The company plans to develop 150 MWe of geothermal power.

Summary of the Position

  • The Health & Safety Supervisor is responsible for supervision of workplace safety and healthcare for the Corbetti Geothermal project in the project area.

  • The Health & Safety Supervisor is the most senior field based HSE specialist and may deputise for the HSE Manager from time to time.

  • The Health & Safety Supervisor is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for the project, including the work areas, equipment and accommodation of contractors and suppliers 

  • Supervise the safety of staff and contractors in the project area and in any place where Corbetti project staff or contractors work, stay or travel.

  • Ensure Corbetti activities are conducted in a manner that does not jeopardise the health, safety and well-being of the surrounding communities

  • Develop and use health and safety checklists for checking activities for compliance with company requirements. These activities include driving, manual handling and lifting, journey management, working alone, working at heights, and permitting.

  • Check Standard Operating Procedures regularly to ensure they remain a safe, healthy and environmentally friendly method of working.

  • Lead Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and method assessments for new activities in the field, and review implementation of JSAs and method assessments by other to ensure relevance.

  • Lead accident investigation activities.

  • Preparing HSE inspection plans

  • Conduct audits and inspections of activities to ensure they are conducted safely

  • Conduct equipment inspections to ensure equipment is safe to use

  • Conduct inspections of facilities including camps, logistics areas and rig areas to ensure safe and healthy working environments

  • Identify and record hazards in the project area

  • Record HSE statistics in the field.

  • Make regular HSE reports to managers as required by management

  • Make and deliver presentations on safety topics as training for staff and the community

  • Develop and provide HSE induction training to new staff, visitors and contractors.

  • Maintain store of PPE and safety equipment in the field, maintaining appropriate stock levels and issue PPE and safety equipment.

  • Educate local community on risks and dangers of Corbetti operations and act as focal point for HSE questions.

  • Support CLOs in promoting community safety

Organisational Position

  • The Health & Safety Supervisor will report to the Health & Safety Manager

  • The position’s main clients include the Corbetti Drilling and Construction Managers

  • The position is based in the Corbetti Geothermal project area with occasional visits to the office in Addis Ababa.

  • This role will work very closely with contractor Health & Safety personnel and the drilling contractor.

Job Requirements

Experience

  • At least three(3) years’ experience in a health and safety role with experience in either drilling or industrial construction

  • At least one year supervisory experience is needed.

  • An undergraduate degree.

  • Ability to do assessments, write reports and do analysis is important.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is important.

  • Good written and spoken English is mandatory.

  • Written and spoken Afan Oromo is desirable.
