Job Summary 

The Garage In-Charge is a highly technical, hands-on leader responsible for supervising daily operations while actively executing complex maintenance, diagnostic, and repair activities alongside the team. The role ensures the maximum availability, safety, and reliability of all company vehicles, heavy machinery, forklifts, cranes, loaders, and mobile equipment. Acting as the direct second-in-command, the incumbent assists the Auto Maintenance Manager in administrative duties and assumes full departmental leadership in the manager's absence.

Key Duties & Responsibilities 

Hands-on Maintenance Execution 

• Actively perform complex diagnostic, troubleshooting, and repair tasks on vehicles and heavy machinery alongside the technical team. 

• Assist the Manager in developing, implementing, and physically executing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance plans. 

• Directly manage workshop floor operations and personally step in to resolve complex mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical failures to minimize equipment downtime. 

• Ensure all overhauls, servicing, and repairs strictly follow manufacturer standards and safety guidelines through personal quality checks. 

• Maintain detailed service records, asset histories, and compliance tracking via ERP systems. 

Fleet and Equipment Management 

• Monitor, test-drive, and personally inspect the daily performance, utilization, and physical condition of company-owned and contractor fleets. 

• Enforce proper tracking of logbooks, mileage records, and fuel consumption to control operational costs. 

• Conduct regular physical inspections and technical life-cycle assessments of plant mobile machinery. 

Workshop Floor and Spare Parts Control 

• Maintain and enforce high technical standards, tool calibration, quality workmanship, and workshop housekeeping by leading by example. 

• Identify exact technical specifications for parts and coordinate with Stores and SCM to ensure the availability of critical spare parts, tools, and consumables. 

• Ensure accurate and real-time data inputs into the maintenance tracking systems and ERP. 

Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) 

• Lead daily toolbox meetings and enforce strict PPE compliance across all technical staff on the floor. 

• Conduct routine safety inspections of the garage workshop and field service areas. 

• Oversee and ensure the environmentally compliant disposal of toxic waste, including used oils, batteries, and worn parts. 

Cost, Performance, and Administration 

• Contribute technical data and repair insights for the preparation of the annual auto maintenance budget. 

• Track key performance metrics (KPIs), analyze breakdown trends, and implement practical, cost-saving repair measures. 

• Evaluate and cross-verify external repair quotations and vendor performance before submitting them to the Manager for approval. 

Leadership and Team Development 

• Directly manage, motivate, and mentor the technical workshop team 

• Identify skill gaps, conduct hands-on technical training, and support periodic performance evaluations. 

• Promote a culture of strong accountability, teamwork, and continuous workflow improvement. 

Reporting and Compliance 

• Compile and review daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance, fuel, and equipment uptime reports. 

• Ensure all garage operations comply with local transport regulations and company vehicle policies.

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a highly related technical field.

  • Certification in Advanced Workshop Management, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, or Advanced Diagnostic Systems is highly desirable.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of intensive, hands-on mechanical experience in automobile or heavy equipment maintenance.

  • At least 3 years of supervisory or team-lead experience within an industrial, manufacturing, or logistics environment.

  • Proven track record of working hands-on while leading a team of mechanics and technicians.

  • Demonstrated readiness or prior experience in assuming managerial responsibilities during the Auto Maintenance Manager's absence.

  • Expert-level practical understanding of mechanical, electrical, electronic diagnostic, and hydraulic systems.

  • Proficiency in ERP-based maintenance modules and fleet management software.

Technical Competencies

  • Master-level diagnostic, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis skills covering mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.

  • In-depth technical expertise in automotive, utility, and heavy machinery operations, including cranes, forklifts, loaders, earth-moving equipment, and other mobile machinery.

  • Strong capability in planning, scheduling, and executing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs.

  • Ability to supervise and personally perform complex repairs and maintenance activities.

  • Experience in monitoring fleet utilization, vehicle inspections, maintenance records, fuel consumption, and asset lifecycle management.

  • Strong understanding of workshop operations, tool calibration, quality workmanship, and workshop housekeeping.

  • Knowledge of spare parts identification, inventory coordination, and maintenance planning.

  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance documentation and compliance records using ERP systems.

  • Understanding of transport regulations, company vehicle policies, and environmental compliance related to garage operations.
